Hidden Universes of Information
on the Internet
|
5. Misc. Sites
|
As you have seen, there is an abundance of online resources and a variety of tools to
seek out information. Unfortunately, there are few of us who can afford to dedicate
"their entire life" to the task of constantly searching the Internet for the
latest information in a particular subject. Fortunately, there are other Internet users
who are able to invest such time into the internet. Probably the single best way to
thoroughly cover a topic is to discover a Meta-site for that topic. Meta sites are
subject-specific indices that are created (and maintained) by someone who really cares
about that topic.
Insight into Internet's culture |
Your public web server has detailed access statistics as to who has been visiting each
and every page within your site. You should work towards having easy, clickable access to
this information for each of your product description pages. For example, look at this
annotated view of the access statistics for my own web site (My
site isn't the best example to illustrate this, since my traffic consists mostly of my
course alumni). Some of the visitors to my site are dial-up customers through an ISP, but
there are many business domains also indicated. Your organization could easily develop a
customized web access report which omits anyone from aol.com, erols.com, etc. Recognize
that the webmasters of the sites you visit, will have access to this same kind of
information.
Tip: The best way to discover a "meta-site: |
- Go to a good subject tree such as Yahoo
- Browse around to the subject of your choice
- Usually there is an "indices" listing for each subject area
- Go and visit each of the indices for your subject
- Make a bookmark of the best ones
- Some meta-sites will let you sign-up for email announcements for when the meta site is
updated (sign-up for such announcements)
Note for my Alumni: Your referrals are always appreciated
